Barceló Hotel Group has appointed Marta Barceló Fontirroig as Vice President for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), marking another significant step in the Spanish hospitality group's generational transition.
The appointment places a fourth-generation member of the Barceló family in a senior regional leadership role, while she continues serving as President of Crestline Hotels & Resorts, the group's North American subsidiary.
For a family business approaching a century in hospitality, the move reflects a carefully managed approach to succession, combining established leadership with a new generation taking on greater responsibility.
A Family Legacy, A Growing Career
Marta Barceló Fontirroig is the daughter of Simón Pedro Barceló, the group's Co-Chair and Chief Executive Officer, and represents the fourth generation of the family behind the hospitality business.
She holds a double degree in International Relations and Business Administration and Management from the Pontifical University Comillas (ICAI-ICADE).
Her career with the group began in 2023 at Crestline Hotels & Resorts, where she joined as a business development analyst before progressing into broader management responsibilities.
In 2025, she became a member of Barceló's Management Committee and was appointed President of Crestline Hotels & Resorts.
Her latest appointment expands her responsibilities across EMEA while maintaining her leadership position in North America, giving her oversight responsibilities spanning two major international regions.
Looking Beyond the Family Name
The EMEA appointment is particularly relevant given the diversity of hospitality markets across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Each region presents different opportunities and challenges, from established European tourism destinations to expanding luxury hospitality markets in the Middle East.
For Barceló, adapting to the distinct needs of each market while maintaining a consistent brand identity remains an important consideration.
Fontirroig's experience in business development and North American hotel operations provides a foundation for her expanded responsibilities, although her new position represents a significant increase in geographical scope.
A Carefully Planned Transition
The appointment forms part of a wider leadership transition that began in 2025, following Simón Barceló Tous' departure from his executive position.
Simón Pedro Barceló subsequently became sole Chief Executive Officer of Barceló Corporación Empresarial, alongside his continuing role as Co-Chair of the group.
Simón Barceló Tous remains Co-Chair and will oversee the Mexico Management Committee throughout 2026 alongside Antonio Tovar Barceló, who was appointed Chief Executive Officer for Latin America.
The arrangement is intended to maintain continuity as responsibilities pass between generations.
Fontirroig also serves on the Board of Directors of Barceló Corporación Empresarial, alongside continuing board member Guillermo Barceló Tous.
The Next Chapter for Barceló
For Barceló Hotel Group, the leadership changes reflect an approach to succession that prioritises continuity while gradually introducing the next generation into senior decision-making roles.
Fontirroig's appointment is especially notable for the scale of her responsibilities, combining leadership across North America with a new regional position covering EMEA.
As the group continues its development, her influence will be worth following, particularly in how Barceló balances its long-standing family identity with the demands of managing an international hospitality business.
Nearly a century after its beginnings, the Barceló family remains closely involved in shaping the company's future, with a fourth generation increasingly taking its place at the table.
